The Great Migration

In the beginning of World War 1, there were huge populations of African Americans migrating to the North. The situation in the south was an environment where the "colored" people still did not have the equality they deserved. In the south they didn't have opportunities to get an education or to succeed in anything. When they traveled to the north, the African Americans were filled with hopes that they would get a better life. In an estimation, one million black southerns moved to the less racist part of the country. In the north, there were many job openings because many of the people had to leave to fight in the war.
When the African Americans arrived in the north, it was a time period of many changes. The Northerns and the Southerns would compete to get jobs. There were riots because the Northerns were angry that they had to compete for housings and jobs. The African Americans that were already in the north treated the migrants as if they were unworthy to be there. The migrants suffered and went through many challenges but when they arrived, children were able to get an education and the adults were given the freedom to vote.
The African Americans were in search of a better life. They traveled in huge amounts and at first things were hard. Sometimes they were all stuck together in houses and some lost hope. Many things doubled in price because of the war that was taking place. This movement changed the United States because the African Americans went to go change how life was for them. They were also on a goal to earn equality and change the harsh way they were still being treated, even though slavery was abolished. The movement changed how the people in the south were used to living and how the north was changing in addition to the war. The Great Migration was a time period where African Americans traveled to the north on a search for a better life.

World War One

The four causes of World War 1 were militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. Nationalism is when the people of a country have a strong respect for it and feelings of pride for that country to the point where they would do anything to have the country at its best. Europeans started to feel this way. Imperialism was when strong countries would want to control smaller nations, and this is what Europe intended to do. The alliances were an issue because when two countries would have problems, other countries would join in to defend their ally. Militarism was when nations would create bigger and stronger militaries and navies. The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 triggered the war.
The Lusitania and the Zimmerman Telegraph were two events that made the U.S enter the war. On May 7, 1915 Germans torpedoed the Lusitania where 28 passengers were American. The second event was when Germany and Austria-Hungary sent a telegram to Mexico. In the telegram they asked them to join the Central Powers and in return, when they win the war, Mexico would receive the southwestern region of the United States.
When the war was over there was a peace settlement. Wilson’s Fourteen Points was when there were no more secret dealings in countries and Austro-Hungarian Empire was divided. In the treaty of Versailles the United States returned to isolationism, a country doesn’t get involved with others, and refused to join the League of Nations. I think that the peace settlement caused for the nations to recover. In the 1920s and 1930s I think that isolationism continued and the countries didn’t face more problems.

Two Laws That Changed America

                                      The 15th and 19th Amendment
Voting

Votes for Women

The 15th amendment gave African American men the right to vote, but did not include women. In this time black men did not have the same rights as the white men. The amendment sought to address social problems because you couldn’t be denied the right to vote on your skin color or social status. The main intent of this amendment was that the rights of a citizen shouldn’t be taken away because of race or status. This law succeeded up to the extent where now African Americans have the rights as other men.

The 19th amendment was the law for women's suffrage. This is where women got the right to vote. It was an important thing because women never had the same rights as men. It sought to address social problems because it gave equality to men and women. The main provision of this law was to allow women to be able to speak in what they thought should happen in the country they live in. The amendment extent to solve problems because men were not the only ones to be able to have a say in the things that happen to the country, now women were able to be part of that.
The 15th and 19th amendments are similar because they both target almost the same things. They sought to address social problems because it gave equality to those who were missing. African Americans and women were still being discriminated in these times. These laws solved problems because there would be improvement in democracy. After these laws came into effect, more people had a say in what would be happening.

Splendid little War.

Declares War

Can newspapers and now television stir up so much feeling that they can create wars? I have two views to this. I do believe that this can be possible but I don't think it is likely to happen in our world today. I think this can happen because sometimes workers can say their own opinions on television and they can write things in newspapers. People can write misleading information. I think it can’t start a war because it’s not like the public can go on television or on a newspaper and express their opinions.
If I lived in Europe I wouldn’t think that the U.S became a great world power by defeating Spain because Europe isn’t a bad place. I would just think they had to protect more land and control more people. I would think that Europe is good enough because it has diversity.  They have different places with different cultures and I think the U.S is bigger but it doesn’t mean they better.

Japan's Disaster.

                                                      Japan's moment of destruction

In the afternoon of Friday, March 11, 2011, Japan faced one of the most destructive natural disasters in history. An earthquake of magnitude 8.9 hit, which triggered a tsunami of 23 feet. This occurred in northeast Japan in Sendai. Hundreds and hundreds were killed as the big wave dragged them as well as ships, cars, and homes. Many fires were triggered when the wave tore Sendai apart. Areas around the nuclear power plants had to be evacuated and millions are now left homeless.
Japan is struggling to return everything back to how it was but that won’t be easy. They are dealing with this problem in many ways. Japan is having outside help from places like the United States, Columbia and Mexico. Workers in Japan are trying to lower the heat of the nuclear power plant by using water. People are also organizing rescue teams to go find missing people, clean ups, and returning people to their country of origin.
The nuclear power plants are one of the main concerns right now. The problem is that nuclear power plants are releasing radiation that is harmful to both humans and the environment.  A cooling system has failed and can’t cool them down. People that are in the surrounding areas have been evacuated at least 2 miles away. They are focused on returning everything to normality.

Booker T. Washington and W.E.B DuBois

   Booker T. Washington                W.E.B DuBios

W.E.B Dubois and Booker T. Washington had different approaches because Washington gave importance to economic power while Dubois focused on political power to gain rights. Washington said that African Americans needed to have education to actually get somewhere in life. He helped the African Americans socially by the creation the Tuskegee Institute in 1881. The institute helped African Americans learn farming and industrial skills. He thought differently than DuBois because their lifestyle and the way they thought. They both had their own ideas on how to gain rights for the African Americans.
The other person who worked for the rights of  African Americans was W.E.B DuBois. Dubois formed the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP). This group helps to build efforts of legal and economic equality for African Americans. DuBois ran for important positions to continue his progress. He would do what he could to keep the African Americans protected but he had different approaches from Washington.
